The valve gate injection molding technique is an effective and widely accepted method for producing plastic parts that require top-level quality, such as medical or cosmetic items. This process can suffer from a flaw, however, in which the plastic that is shot out of the injection barrel’s nozzle tends to run off, detracting from the item’s appearance and possibly weakening it overall. To correct this issue, a technique called sequential valve gating is employed, and this is where a series of specialized valve gates are helpful.
With a sequenced valve gate system, each individual valve gate can be opened and closed in a set time interval so that the weld between one material front and the next is minimal. This allows the mold to produce a part with a consistent wall thickness, which is impossible to achieve using either a hot drop or cold runner. This feature is particularly important when forming larger, more complex parts that would be too large to fit into a standard hot or cold runner mold.
Valve gate systems can also improve a product’s strength and weight by effectively reducing the amount of molten plastic that must be injected into each cavity to maintain a certain level of wall thickness. This is possible because the smaller sized valves can be placed more closely together than a hot-runner or cold-runner mold’s larger gates, which in turn reduces the amount of material injected per cavity and the overall weight of the finished product.
